Wine Stems: Fully Functional or Fully Fashionable?
There are many great debates in the world of wine. A recent debate that has resulted in the answer of “who cares, just drink it” is the great debate of wine glasses with stems vs. wine glasses without stems.
According to wine connoisseurs, stemmed glasses serve a twofold purpose:
- By holding the stem and not the glass you avoid warming up the liquids inside. This is important for all wine but especially white wines that are supposed to be chilled.
- The annoying smudges that look like a child’s fingerprints on a glass door are avoided by holding the stem.
According to Merriam Webster, a stem is defined as “something held to resemble a plant stem: such as the cylindrical support of a piece of stemware (such as a goblet).” And while the function of the stem is still necessary, others find a third purpose for the cylindrical support:
3. To add flare to an otherwise traditional and elegantly bland glass.
That’s right- the stem has the added benefit of being a reflection of the designer- merely decoration. These are our top 4 wine glasses with stems that serve the two main purposes of a traditional stem as well as add a level of flare that’s hard to look away from.
Pier 1 Imports, a high-end home decor store made a wine glass with a design that will stick to you (cactus pun necessary.) They embrace the traditional wine glass stem but add on two extra green arms to give you a reimagined wine glass that is totally fancactus (again, necessary.)
There isn’t much to say about this handblown wine glass except we’re certain that this little red piggy is definitely the one that went “wee, wee, wee all the way home.”
On #WineWednesdays we drink from pink...Eiffel Tower glasses. Don’t worry, this wine glass is Etsy, Mean Girls, and recent college grad approved.
These limited edition engraved polar bear wine glasses sold out on Ebay so we’re pretty sure there was only 1 or they were way cooler than we'll ever have the pleasure of knowing.
